Brain
TORONTO, ONT - May 29, 2007 - CHILDREN OF BIRT - Images from the Brain Injury Recovery Team unit at Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto. Ashley Ortizo, 3, middle, developed an infection in early February, that attacked the myelin of her brain. The condition is called acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) - a neurological disorder characterized by inflammation of the brain and spinal cord caused by damage to the myelin. Here she is in a discussion with ChildLife Specialist, Michelle Barnardi, left, and Joanie King, a student occupational therapist, right, during a cognitive group session. These sessions help small groups of patients to better understand the nature of their injuries. They become young brain experts in many ways.(Photo by Peter Power/The Globe and Mail)pmp
